Hosta rupifraga is native to a very small area at 2,500' elevation on Japan's remote volcanic Hachijo Jima island, where it can be found growing in sunny rock cracks near the crater's rim. Hosta rupifraga is one of the most sought-after hosta species, especially for hybridizers. The 8" tall x 18" wide clump is composed of very thick, dark green, matte finish leaves. This is not the clone of Hosta longipes var. latifolia that is often sold as Hosta rupifraga. The lavender flowers top the 18" wide clump in late summer and often into fall.
