I first saw Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' in 2001 in the garden of Minnesota hosta breeder, Don Dean, and was blown away. I've grown lots of daylilies, but had never seen one with that much oomph...a technical term. Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' performed equally as well in our NC garden since, as we later discovered, it was bred in NC by our friend, Van Sellers of Iron Gate Gardens. For us, Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' is a vigorous tetraploid with incredibly saturated red flowers highlighted by a yellow eye, all atop 3' tall stalks. The garden show is enhanced because so many flowers open together and the flowering season, which starts in early June (NC), seems to last for a long time. Hemerocallis 'All American Chief' has since won the 2008 Stout Silver Medal from the American Hemerocallis Society, among its many honors.
