Heloniopsis orientalis is a small Asian wildflower...the counterpart to our American native swamp pink, Helonias bullata. The flat rosette of narrow, oval-shaped green leaves, often turning red in winter, gives rise to 3" flower stalks starting in mid-March (NC). Our clone, Heloniopsis 'Purple Sprite' is a purple-flowered selection topped with clusters of tiny but showy lavender-purple flowers. Heloniopsis orientalis 'Purple Sprite' has proven easy to grow and flowers well at the edge of our bog garden...slightly moist but well-drained soils are best. This is a tiny rock-garden sized plant, best grown around other tiny plants where it will not get lost, smothered, or mugged. Our clumps have thrived since 1996 without attention, growing alongside pitcher plants.
