Habenaria repens is an easy-to-grow North American native orchid which ranges natively from North Carolina south to Florida and west to Texas, where it is found in bogs, moist meadows, ditches, and nearby floodplains. Commonly called Water Spider Orchid, Habenaria repens can grow in a range of conditions from damp soils to as a pure aquatic. Habenaria repens is stoloniferous, so can form nice sized colonies. Each rosette is composed of 3-8 succulent, lance-shaped green leaves, that give rise to 18" to 2' tall stalks, each which end in a raceme of up to four dozen tiny spidery green flowers. Habenaria repens produces its nocturnally scented (vanilla) flowers repeatedly all summer and into fall. Our offering is a 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a nursery propagated form from an original Patrick McMillan collection from Berkeley County, SC.
