This easy-to-grow and spectacular NC native is also found from Illinois through Louisiana in low woodlands as well as in bogs. The 18" tall stems are clothed with green linear leaves and topped in September and October with clusters of closed flowers resembling tiny blue cigars which house the reproductive organs...and we now know how much fun cigars can be! Soapwort gentian is best used as a mingler in the border or as a specimen in the woodland garden...a very versatile garden plant!
