The rarely-offered NC native Gentiana catesbyi grows to only 12" tall with short, sprawling stems covered with whorls of thumbnail sized, rubbery, dark green leaves. In October through November the stalks of this cute gentian are smothered in clusters of narrowly open, tubular blue flowers...attractive to hummingbirds. Gentiana catesbyi prefers moist conditions where competition is minimal...we have been thrilled at the ease of culture. Gentiana catesbyi is named after Mark Catesby, an English naturalist from the 1700s, who visited and collected in SC from 1722-1723.
