Eupatorium hernandezii is an amazing, but little known evergreen woody Joe-Pye weed from 3,000' elevation in the San Carlos Mountains of northern Mexico. Our plant came in 2000 via North American Rock Garden Society Past President Bobby Ward's Mexican botanizing expedition, where he found it growing with Ilex rubra, Abies guatemalensis, and Eryngium venustrum. In our garden, Eupatorium hernandezii is a 6' tall x 10' wide, easy-to-grow woody perennial, clothed all year with 3" long glossy green leaves and topped in November and December with lovely terminal panicles of pale lavender flowers...a welcome floral addition when little else is flowering from Thanksgiving to Christmas.
