Disporopsis aspersa 'Winter Gem' is 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a new cultivar selection from a batch of seedlings we offered simply as Disporopsis aspersa from 2011-2014. With several new clones in the trade, growers need to distinguish each with a cultivar name. Disporopsis aspersa 'Winter Gem' is one of the taller clones we grow with 14" tall, lightly purple-speckled stalks, each clothed with five to seven 2" wide x 5" long, glossy evergreen leaves, alternately arranged on the upper third of the stem. The plants are adorned with small axillary, lemon-scented flowers (yellow flecked with purple) in mid-April, then with blue fruit that persists into winter. Our 20-year old patch is now 6' wide.
