Cypripedium 'Sebastian' is a 1998 Werner Frosch hybrid, named for cypripedium grower Sebastian Urban, that combines the genes of the American East Coast Cypripedium parviflorum v. parviflorum with the Northwest US native Cypripedium montanum. This long distance romance resulted in vigorous 23" tall plants that produce narrow flowering stems topped with white pocketbook-shaped flowers that are backed by prominent, twisted, red-burgundy sepals. The Cypripedium montanum parent passed along both a slight fragrance as well as the multiple flowers per stalk trait. These flowering-sized plants are in very limited supply. As with all cypripediums, they should only be attempted by experienced gardeners.
