Coreopsis ‘Gold Standard’ is a 2016 Mt. Cuba Center introduction that has been quite impressive in our trials. We've shied away from most cultivars of the North American (Canada south to Texas) native Coreopsis tripteris because of their terrible flopping garden habits when in flower, but that's been eliminated with Coreopsis 'Gold Standard' because it turned out to be a hybrid with Coreopsis verticillata. This selection forms a large clump of 6' tall stalks, clothed with deeply-divided green leaves, and topped, starting in late summer with stalks of bright 2" wide brown-centered yellow daisies. Coreopsis 'Gold Standard' was selected by Mt. Cuba from seed originally collected in Alabama. Plants grow in a wide range of soils from gravel to rich compost, and from alkaline to slightly acidic. While it prefers soils that are moist to average, it will be fine through short term droughts. We are pleased to make this outstanding native hybrid more widely available.
