Clematis 'Purple Gumdrops' is a 2023 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a special Hans Hansen creation, bred from a compact dwarf form of Clematis addisonii we brought back from Virginia in the early 1990s. This superb compact clump former is small enough at 1' tall x 20" wide, to be perfect in most rock gardens. The 1' long stems are clothed with oblong green leaves, and adorned, starting for us in early May with small pendant dark purple bells, each highlighted by white lips...cute as the proverbial button and tough as nails in the garden. This is extremely difficult to propagate, so don't expect another offering for many years.
