This little-known American native clematis hails from Oklahoma southeast to Florida, where it can be found along stream banks in both acidic and neutral pH soils. Clematis glaucophylla is similar to Clematis viorna with glaucous foliage and adorned from June until October with hundreds of pendent lavender bells, each edged in white. As the flowers fade, the 15' tall vine is smothered with attractive silvery seed heads. This fantastic garden specimen is both a honeybee and hummingbird favorite. Our form of Clematis glaucophylla from the Florida panhandle was shared by Florida plantsman Mike McCaffery.
