I'm not sure how we've missed growing this beauty for so many years, but we are pleased to share Zac Hill's collection of Carex picta from Calhoun County, Alabama. Carex picta, one of the few dioecious sedges (he plants and she plants) can be found in the wild from Indiana south to Mississippi in average to dry woodland slopes. In the garden, this evergreen, tight-clumping sedge has formed an 8" tall x 20" wide evergreen clump. Our 2024 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction is a showier male selection, which, starting for us in early March, is adorned with an amazing floral show that rivals any of the Asian sedges. The short spikes are near black, but tipped with an amazing pollen show, which catches your eye from quite a distance. We have found Carex picta quite easy to grow in typical garden soils.
