Carex pensylvanica 'Straw Hat' has surprisingly prospered in our hot, humid, summer, where this species typically doesn't thrive, since its native range runs from Canada south to Arkansas. The narrow, fine-textured, semi-evergreen foliage is topped with flowers in mid-spring, atop upright 8" tall stalks. By summer, the foliage lays flat, creating a beautiful textural carpet. Although native to moist woods, it has thrived for us in our amended sandy loam with average moisture, where the drainage is good.
