(aka: Begonia delavayi, Begonia mairei) Begonia henryi is one of those strangely little-known, winter hardy perennial begonias. The jagged heart-shaped leaves on this small, compact, 10" tall perennial emerge nicely patterned with purple and silver. The clumps are topped with stalks of pink flowers in September and October. Begonia henryi dislikes deep shade and grows and flowers far better in part sun to open, light shade, duplicating where it grows in rock crevices up to 7,500' elevation in southern China. Begonia henryi is also very late to re-emerge in spring, rarely poking its head above ground prior to mid-to-late June.
