Begonia grandis 'Alba' is another excellent form of the classic hardy deciduous begonia. The fleshy upright stalks emerge in May (NC), and extend to 2' tall, clothed with corrugated green leaves with stunning red backsides. Starting in late June and continuing until fall, the stalks are adorned with drooping terminal clusters of pale pink calyces which subtend the white flowers. Although Begonia grandis 'Alba' is a clump former, it will spread via leaf bulbils, which drop to the soil below in fall.
