(aka: Anisocampium sheareri) Athyrium sheareri is a dynamite, but little-known groundcover fern, originally shared with us by fern guru and author, the late John Mickel, from his spore collection in Japan. This very slow spreader with scrumptious black green foliage, hails from valley and streamsides to 6,000' elevation in China, Japan, and Korea. Genetically, Athyrium sheareri is fascinating since it is an apomictic triploid (three times the normal number of chromosomes, and it can't have meaningful sex).
