I love asparagus ferns, and the latest star in our garden trials has been Asparagus suaveolens. This drought tolerant South Africa native thrives alongside cactus and agaves in our full sun rock garden. The 4' long, arching stems are clothed in stiff, linear green, somewhat sharp needles. Asparagus suaveolens takes a few years to mature, but it will eventually form a 3.5' tall x 5' wide textural gem, complete with small red fruit in late summer. For us, Asparagus suaveolens is deciduous in our garden, but would be evergreen where the temperatures don't drop much below freezing.
