For 2025, Plant Delights/JLBG is pleased to introduce the rare, little-known, Asarum crassum. This wild ginger is one that consistently sails through our winters unblemished, despite being endemic to two small tropical islands off the south coast of Japan, Ucchima and Ujimukaeshima. In the woodland garden, the slowly expanding clumps of highly polished dark green leaves are simply outstanding. These likely speciated when their native habitat was much higher (and colder), hence the unexpected hardiness. This odd ginger flowers year round, with flowers pointed downward, providing easier access for pollinators like pill bugs and tiny flies. Our plants are clonally propagated from an original clone from plantsman Barry Yinger.
