The little-known Aquilegia rockii was named after the late plant explorer, Joseph Rock, who first collected it in China where it grows from 8,000' - 11,000' elevation near the western border of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. Our offering is from modern day plant explorers, Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones, who re-collected it in Zhongdian, China (Yunnan Province, near Tibet). Aquilegia rockii makes a 2' tall plant with reddish stems that are adorned with lovely green leaves, each highlighted with a central silver pattern and a dark purple border when spring days are cool. Aquilegia rockii is topped with pendulous light lavender flowers often starting in May/June, long after most other columbines have finished blooming.
