Antennaria parvifolia is a western North American (Canada south to Mexico) native that is the ultimate rock garden groundcover. The 1" tall, tight, silver-leaf evergreen mat grows to only 1' in width after 2 years. In spring, the mats are topped with short matchstick-like spikes of hairy brown tufts that look nothing like most folks idea of a flower. Little-leaf pussytoes has thrived for us in dry, rocky soil in the rock garden, where it's a host plant for painted lady butterflies.
