(aka: Trigridia purpurea) Alophia drummondii is a delightful small US native iris-relative, hopelessly confused in the trade with another Texas native,...the completely different Herbertia lahue. Alophia drummondii hails from the region encompassing Mississippi west to Oklahoma and Texas, where it can be found in sandy pinelands. Alophia drummondii emerges from a winter-dormant corm in mid-spring, forming 15" tall, narrow, pleated green leaves. The 15" tall flower stalk is topped with terminally produced, sideways-facing, intricately-decorated, purple, cypella-like flowers from May until October. We have found these very easy to grow in a part-sun garden setting.
