Agave sp. 'Azul Monterrey' has been touted as a possible new century plant species, but our theory is that it constitutes a naturally occurring hybrid swarm between Agave ovatifolia, Agave asperrima, and Agave montana. This high elevation population was discovered in the Monterrey area of Northern Mexico, where it grows on karst limestone mountains, in an open pine/oak forest. In our early trials, Agave ovatifolia and Agave asperrima genes appear the most dominant. This offering represents the shiny green plants, which account for only 10% of the seedlings. Based on its location, it should have hardiness very similar to Agave ovatifolia.
