Abutilon 'Twister' has been a superb, winter hardy selection for us in Zone 7b, since 2005. This 2005 Monterey Bay Nursery introduction is an Abutilon megapotamicum hybrid that forms a large 4' tall x 7' wide specimen. The stems are laden with vermillion orange bells with a dark red central eye. The plants and the flowers are intermediate in size between Abutilon megapotamicum and Abutilon pictum. For us, flowering starts in May and continues until late November, when a hard freeze finally ends the show. Twister flowering maple makes a superb hanging basket or container specimen where it isn't winter hardy.
