More Information About Sorghastrum

Sorghastrum is a small genus of prairie grass that once was dominant across much of the US Mid-west. It provides year-round cover for a variety of small birds and mammals and the most popular species, S. nutans, is a larval host plant for the pepper-and-salt skipper (Amblyscirtes hegon).

Sorghastrum (Indiangrass) Growing Conditions

Sorghastrum species tend to be deep rooted which means that they are quite drought tolerant, and can prevent erosion. Indiangrass can tolerate a variety of soil types, including poor soils, dry soils, infertile soils and even heavy clay. In fact, in rich soils, it tends to grow too tall and flop over. Maintenance is easy...just cut it back to the ground in early spring before the new growth emerges. Sorghastrum is a great perennial ornamental grass for a meadow or hillside garden or as a vertical accent in a border.
