News flash! - not all plants have green leaves! In fact, many plants have interesting leaf patterning that are worth growing for their unique foliage alone. These plants with patterned foliage include spotted plants, splotchy plants, striped plants, streaked plants, plants with chevrons or other interesting color patterns, plants with pikos, plants with a unique leaf edge or leaf center, and plants whose leaves have contrasting veins.
The king of plants with patterned foliage has got to be hosta. If you can think of a weird leaf pattern, there is a hosta out there that has already invented it. If hostas are king, then the queen of plants with patterned foliage has got to be agave. Although they are usually limited to striped leaves, there are a large number of striped agaves and they are all fascinating. Two very close runners-up to agave are canna lily and colocasia with their wide variety of fantastical colored stripes, spots, and blotches. The princes and dukes of the plants with patterned foliage abound and include heuchera, heucherella, ornamental grasses, arum, arisaema, asarum, amorphophallus, aristolochia, aspidistra, ferns, aucuba, cyclamen, oxalis, sarracenia, trillium, and yuccas. The chevrons of persicaria and curcuma are so cool, they look like they belong on a sergeant's epaulets.
