Hemerocallis altissima is a little-known daylily species that hails from southwest China near the famed Purple Mountain. From June through August, this deciduous nocturnal daylily produces 2' tall grass-like foliage topped with 5.5' tall flower spikes whose fragrant, pure yellow flowers open in the evening and remain open until the following morning. Unfortunately, most plants sold as Hemerocallis altissima are actually Hemerocallis 'Autumn Minaret' (brown blush on the inside petals)...a wonderful, but early Hemerocallis altissima hybrid from the late Dr. Stout. We obtained this wild-collected Hemerocallis altissima clone many years ago from the New York Botanical Garden and have added a cultivar name to distinguish it from the species imposters.
