More Information About Agastache

Agastache (also known as anise hyssop or hummingbird mint) is a genus of mostly American native, drought-tolerant mint relatives which grow wild primarily in the western US. Agastache is popular for its colorful flowers and licorice or lemon scented foliage which can be used in both potpourri and cooking and are rich in polyphenol antioxidants.

Agastache prefers full sun and is not too picky about soil as long as it is well-drained. Agastache hybrids will bloom all summer with colorful blue, orange, or pink flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees in droves. After growing tall all summer, agastache plants retreat to a short rosette in the winter. The tall summer stems should not be pruned back until early spring. Other than this annual haircut, agastache is a low maintenance and easy-to-grow perennial flowering plant.

The heat and humidity of the Southeast US is tough on these summer-flowering perennials, however recent breeding advancements have resulted in tougher agastaches for this climate. When you are ready to buy agastache for your garden, check out our online list of agastache for sale.
