Flowering Ground Cover Plants that make Great Ground Covers for Shade

Ground covers are perennial garden plants that are an alternative to grass. In woodland gardens, there are many plants that will do just fine as ground covers for shade. Ground covers can transform a dull or barren area into a low maintenance showplace! At Plant Delights Nursery we offer flowering ground cover plants that will transform your gardens.

Ajuga (Bugleweed) is a short (2-4 inch) ground cover that fares well in rock and woodland gardens. It is a deer resistant plant that also attracts butterflies, especially Swallowtail butterflies, and the flowers attract hummingbirds. Other ground covers for shade are Asarum and Carex. Asarum (Wild Ginger)are small, but exquisite, deer resistant perennials also known for their heart-shaped leaves. If you get down on your hands and knees and poke around under the leaves, you will find flowers! Carex (Sedge) is a shade ornamental grass that can be used to line walkways or fill in barren areas. It is a low maintenance plant that comes in a variety of colors.

Cyclamen is one of the flowering ground cover plants that will cause your woodland garden guests to exclaim “oooh”. The flowers are pink, purple and white and the leaves are heart-shaped. Some of the dwarf hostas make a good ground cover for shade. Two examples are Hosta 'Mighty Mouse' and Hosta 'Mini Skirt'.

Laurentia fluviatilis (Blue Star Creeper) makes a one-inch mound of round green leaves with tiny light blue flowers in the spring. It can spread as much as 12-18” the first year. Meehania (Wood Mint) only grows just a few inches tall, and it spreads via stolons to form a small patch.

At Plant Delights Nursery, we can help to transform your woodland garden into a “glamour shot” when you purchase our flowering ground cover plants, but ground covers do more than just look pretty. They cover the ground with a carpet of vegetation that helps to prevent the germination of weeds. They also protect the soil from erosion and water loss. Whatever your reason to plant ground covers, let Plant Delights Nursery be your source for information as well as plants.
