This is another of the wonderful native ironweeds, whose sole purpose in life is to give work to the DOT mowing crews. In late summer, the 6' stalks clothed with pointed leaves are topped with large clusters of violet purple flowers. After the flowers dry in the winter, they are great for dried arrangements. Vernonias can be cut back in mid summer for a shorter clump.
