Trillium x freatum 'Spencer' is a 2020 Plant Delights/JLB introduction of what we feel are naturally-occurring hybrids between Trillium cuneatum and Trillium freemanii that we first discovered in Van Buren County, TN in 2000. Here, it grew at 2,000' elevation on a north-facing slope with Hydrangea arborescens. It's certainly possible that this actually represents a new, undiscovered species, but due to the variable petal width (between T. freemanii and T. cuneatum), our current thinking leans toward a hybrid population. The dark green and silver mottled foliage sits atop stout, 8" tall stems, topped in mid-April (NC) with purple petals.
