This is the largest and most widespread of the eastern sessile (flowers sit right on top of the leaves) trilliums...native from NC to Mississippi. The three mottled leaves (olive green specks on pewter) occur atop short stems. In mid April to late, the three petalled dark purple flowers sit just above the leaves. In our garden, this has been one of the easiest and fastest multiplying species (possibly because we accidentally rototilled the thick underground rhizomes into hundreds of tiny pieces).
