Tricyrtis flava is a rare "vulnerable" Japanese endemic toad lily species that is without a doubt one of the finest members of the genus, and certainly one of the least known. The foliage emerges in spring with dramatic dark purple spotting, that soon ages to dark green, before disappearing in the heat of summer. In early fall, the short, compact clumps are topped with clusters of quarter-sized clear yellow, upward-facing flowers, each held above the foliage by a 4" stem. A mass of Tricyrtis flava in the woodland garden is just like a bowl of good ice cream.... indescribable!
