(aka: Trautvetteria japonica) Trautvetteria caroliniensis var. japonica is the Asian counterpart to our East Coast US native false bugbane. Growing in cold regions of northern Japan, this thalictrum relative is found colonizing wetland areas. The slowly stoloniferous rhizomes give rise to serrate green basal leaves, topped from early summer through fall with 2' tall stalks, ending in a corymbs of white thalictrum-like frothy flowers. A well-grown patch of Trautvetteria is truly a sight to behold in the summer garden. A cool, moist site is needed to grow this well.
