Silene subciliata is a rare endemic, native to only a few locations in sandy, disturbed lowlands in remote parts of east Texas and west Louisiana. It lives in the boonies, obviously from embarrassment over being bald...the only hairless silene we've ever seen. We've adopted it and are thrilled to share, thanks to an excellent seed crop. Silene subciliata forms an evergreen basal rosette of flat, glossy green leaves. The central stalk expands upward to 4' tall by July, when hundreds of star-shaped brilliant scarlet red flowers appear at the end of the incredibly branched stems, with a floral progression that continues until fall. We think you'll really fall in love with Rudolph-worthy, fluorescent-flowered Silene subciliata.
