Sarracenia purpurea var. venosa is the southern coastal plain form of the widespread US native purple pitcher plant. In its native range from Virginia south through Georgia, it can be found in wet pine savannas and seepage bogs. The 6" tall x 1' wide, offsetting clumps are composed of horizontal pitchers that lay on, or just above the ground. Compared to the northern Sarracenia purpurea var. purpurea, the southern form has more ruffled pitchers that are externally quite hairy, and usually take on a more reddish hue in fall. Also, unlike the more northern form, the traps remain evergreen for up to two years. In spring, the bright red fragrant flowers atop 10" stems are amazing.
