Thanks to hardy palm grower Larry Green for sharing seed from the Sabal palmetto growing at his former family home in Mocksville, NC (1 hour southwest of Winston-Salem). Larry tells us this Sabal palmetto was planted around 1980, and survived the mega-death winter of 1984/85 in NC. Larry's palm was grown from seed he collected years earlier from a Sabal palmetto at a motel in Fayetteville, NC, which also still survives. The broad fronds are less divided than some Sabal palmettos, and Larry tells us that Sabal palmetto 'Mocksville' begins flowering at a very young age. If you're interested in this hardier form of the normally unreliable Sabal palmetto, don't miss this special opportunity.
