I fell in love with Ruscus colchicus when I first saw it growing in England's Hillier's Arboretum, but it took me years to acquire a start. We are thrilled to now share the Hillier's clone of what we think is the most beautiful of all the ruscus species. Ruscus colchicus hails from the Caucasus, with our offering of Roy Lancaster's collection from near the town of Chokhatauri, in the Guria region of Western Georgia (the European one) along the Black Sea. The easy way to tell Ruscus colchicus from all of the other ruscus is that the flowers are under the cladodes (fake leaves) instead of on top. In 5 years, Ruscus colchicus forms an 18" tall x 3' wide evergreen clump of 45 degree angled dark green stems, each clothed with soft 4"x 1" evergreen leaves. If you have both a male and female plant, you'll be rewarded with bright red fruit in the winter attached the underside of each cladode.
