(aka: Polianthes Y09-61) Polianthes 'Mexican Firecracker' is a very rare tuberose hybrid from the former Yucca Do Nursery, of a cross between two North American natives, Polianthes tuberosa and Polianthes howardii. The deciduous, small, rubbery-leaf clumps produce large numbers of 3' tall spikes for us in late June, each laden with narrow, tubular flowers which are salmon on the exterior, with a rusty red interior, and a bright yellow throat. Although not fragrant, they are prolific in flower and quite attractive for area hummingbirds. Average to dry soils and part sun is ideal.
