Podophyllum 'Kaleidoscope' was introduced in 2002 as a selection from a Japanese nursery. We went back to the original Japanese nursery for plants, and while we can't call it Podophyllum 'Kaleidoscope', we also can't tell any difference between this and the patented seedling. The original plants, which came from China so, were finally determined to be Podophyllum tonkinense. Each 18" tall, very hairy stalk on this deciduous clumping perennial is topped with a solitary hexagonal green/silvery-green patterned leaf highlighted by an irregularly regular black starfish pattern. In spring, mature plants are also adorned by the red, pendulous-petalled flowers held just below the leaves. Unlike our native Podophyllum peltatum, this mayapple doesn't run or go summer dormant. While we can keep it alive, its lack of heat tolerance makes it better suited to cooler summer gardens.
