Phlomis italica 'Frisco' has been a great performer in our trials, making a 2' tall x 5' wide sub-shrub clothed with 3" long, hastate, hairy grey leaves and adorned in late spring with axillary whorls of mauvy-pink flowers. Rub the leaves and enjoy the aroma of fresh turpentine...yum, yum. The little-known species Phlomis italica has proven to be very easy to grow even in our humid climate. We have found that good drainage and a hot sunny location are ideal. In winters where the temperatures drop into single digits F, Phlomis italica becomes perennial. We named this clone that we picked up at the San Francisco Botanical Garden sale in 1999.
