(aka: Parodia mammulosa ssp. submammulosus) Notocactus submammulosus is another of the South American (Argentina, Uruguay) cacti that has thrived since 2011 in our cold wet winters. In the wild, Notocactus submammulosus can be found from 300' to 5,500' elevation where it grows in rocky, grassy meadows. Each solitary plant forms a 3.5" tall x 5" wide green ball, adorned with attractive interlacing spines. In late April/early May (NC), the clumps are topped with stunning bright yellow flowers accented by bright red stigmas. Reportedly, orange- and pink-flowered forms exist, so keep a lookout as these seed-grown plants flower. The specific epithet "submammulosus" translates to "below the nipples." Good winter drainage is the key to success.
