(aka: Notocactus concinnus var. apricus/Parodia concinna) In our hardy cactus garden, one of the stars of spring has been Notocactus apricus...a denizen of Uruguay and southern Brazil, where it's found on sunny, grassy slopes. Notocactus apricus forms 2" tall x 3.5" wide, slowly offsetting rosettes, covered with non-sharp, thick, brown hair. Starting for us in late April, the clumps are topped with a multitude of stunning 1"+ wide yellow flowers. Each flower is composed of petals that are creamy toward the edge, dark yellow toward the center, and highlighted by a bright red stigma in the middle. We have found Notocactus apricus quite easy to grow, tolerant of both our wet winters and humid, wet summers.
