Nemastylis tenuis ssp. pringlei is a little-known North American bulb found only in three counties, one in southern Arizona and two in west Texas, where it resides in rocky open ground. Nemastylis tenuis, an iris cousin, is closely related to Calydorea coelestina, and why it's not in the same genus is a mystery to us. The 10" long, upright, linear, grass-like foliage is topped from mid-April through May with 2" azure blue flowers that each last one day. Nemastylis tenuis has proven quite easy to grow in our rock garden...very simple and very beautiful!
