Our 2026 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction is a more winter hardy selection of the North American (US/Mexico) native, bamboo muhly. Our first attempt was from a Yucca Do Mexican collection promoted by JC Raulston in the early 1990s, only to find it lacked any winter hardiness north of Zone 9. Decades later, plantsman Patrick McMillan collected this new, much hardier form, from the Patagonia Mountains in Arizona's Santa Cruz County, at over 4,000' elevation. In the garden it forms a elegant, tightly-clumping specimen of 6' long arching, airy-textured stems, which strongly resemble a clumping bamboo. For us, it dies back to the ground at temperatures below 15 degrees F and re-sprouts in the spring.
