(aka: Smilacina japonica) Maianthemum japonicum 'Korean Treasure' is a 2021 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction, with a long tale to tell. We originally got our start of this gem from the former Minnesota garden of plantsman Hans Hansen, who purchased it from the former Heronswood Nursery. Heronswood got seed and subsequently sold un-flowered seedlings from Korea's Chollipo Arboretum as the Korean native Maianthemum bicolor. Instead, it turned out to be a highly growable form of the often heat and humidity intolerant Korean/Chinese native Maianthemum japonicum, that we've given the clonal name, Maianthemum 'Korean Treasure'. For us, it emerges in late March (NC), and the tight clump of 15" long, arched stalks are topped with terminal cluster of frothy white flowers in April...a great addition to the woodland garden.
