We first met Liriope gigantea 'Lynn Lowrey' in the Alabama garden of nurseryman Bobby Green, where we were first introduced to the concept of liriope as a foundation shrub. We were astonished to see 3.5' tall evergreen clumps (no spreading)...that just seemed impossible. This unique Liriope gigantea seedling came from the late Texas plantsman Lynn Lowrey and was named for him after his death by Bobby Green. The already giant clumps are topped with a show of purple terminal spikes in August. Liriope gigantea is a plant whose origins have been obscured by time, but DNA tests show it to be a tetraploid (double chromosome) species distantly related to Liriope muscari. The clump will need several years in the ground before achieving its full height.
