The easy-to-grow native Lilium philadelphicum has a huge native range from Quebec south to Texas. In fact, there are less than a dozen states in which Lilium philadelphicum has not been found. In the wild L. philadelphicum occurs in moist prairies or open thickets. The wood lily emerges in mid-spring forming 2' tall stalks clothed with whorls of narrow 2" long leaves. In June (NC), the plants are topped with upright-facing bright red-orange flowers, marked yellow and speckled red at the base...just delightful!
