The indestructible Lilium henryi was introduced to western cultivation in the late 1800's by plant explorer Augustine Henry, from plants he collected on limestone cliffs in China's Hubei Province. L. henryi has long been one of our favorite of the Chinese lilies, producing 5' tall stalks, topped in August with dozens of pendent, medium-orange, recurved 3" flowers, each in need of a shave. The stems of L. henryi lean like a good drunk. While they are sturdy enough not to fall, they enjoy having a stout companion to lean on.
