This 2011 Plant Delights Nursery introduction of a splendid form of Ligularia japonica comes from a 2005 seed collection by plantsman Hans Hansen in Sichuan, China. Ligularia japonica 'Chinese Dragon' has made an outstanding clump in our garden, composed of cutleaf bold leaves (less serrated than the Japanese form). The cold-resistant foliage emerges for us in mid-February, during hellebore season, oblivious to two more months of cold temperatures. Starting in mid-June (NC), the deciduous clumps are topped with 4' tall sturdy spikes of yellow-orange flowers that result in a midsummer butterfly orgy...binoculars not included. Moist, rich organic soils produce the largest plants.
